"She waived an airplane with those thumbs"
Rain Phoenix and Uma Thurman are ultra hot on screen together. Gus Van Sant put together a stunning cast in this adaptation of Tom Robbins eponymous novel. This is a far out fictional western with queer centric culture, nature scenes, comedy, and rapturous lesbian romance. It is well worth your time.

this isn't good like it's not a rewarding experience to see this through to its end but it looks kinda cool if you don't pay any attention to anything that happens because if you do it's mostly just annoying to watch. like the world building here is incredibly obnoxious lmao. but also like what about keanu appearing with sideburns in a plaid atrocity before briefly succumbing to an asthma attack brought on by uma's beauty. same! i can understand that. in fact maybe that's the only thing i can understand about this because everything about it is bewildering by design. i don't have the patience for this fake goofball contrived incoherent "weird" shit lol. has anyone read the novel this…

I'm partial to something a little different every now and again, and Gus Van Sant's Even Cowgirls Get The Blues is most definitely that. Now I'd heard that this had gained a cult following over the years, but even with 4K views on LB I'm not sure that's filtered through to those apparent cult followers. Most people have asked, WTF? And they'd be right, because this is one off-kilter film which is indeed hard to describe. Adapted from Tom Robbins' 1976 novel of the same name, he must have been as stoned as Van Sant was when he decided to direct this?
We follow Sissy (Uma Thurman) a girl born with incredibly large thumbs who sees her mutation as a…

Great Director Misfires- 24/27
How to square ECGTB? Is it a radical piece of WLW cinema, or a horribly homophobic, racist and misogynistic mistake? It may well be both, yet it never feels like a compromised piece of art. This is exactly what Van Sant wanted to make, for better or worse. Perhaps his first mistake was casting Uma Thurman, an actress with a surprising inability to act, as his lead, a hitchhiker with unusually large thumbs. Meant to be from somewhere in the deep South, Thurman instills Sissy with a strange woodenness and passivity…

GUS VAN SANT WYD LMAOOO. Absurdly bad adapatation of such a wonderful book. At one point Uma Thurman masturbates while imagining Keanu Reeves' face in the sky but then her giant thumbs get in the way. Idk I guess you just have to see for yourself. There's also this scene...

What—and I cannot stress this enough—the fuck. So conceptually insipid that it physically gave me a headache, and patently ridiculous, though never using said ridiculousness to any significant effect other than a couple cosmetic jokes (which aren't funny). Haven't read Robbins's book - it would seem a few excerpts make way into the film verbatim - but assuming Van Sant remained somewhat faithful to the source, I can't imagine it being a novel that has aged particularly well. Nothing but a lukewarm cauldron of under-baked sociological half-thoughts and glib metaphors for feminism, the most obvious being Sissy's phallic thumbs (just wait until she has one of them surgically downsized - you cannot make this shit up). Bad films blatantly…

Mix together a few good actors, with a horrendous script, a dull style of production, costume, and camera choices, no effort of direction what so ever, with some of the worst editing I've ever seen and you get...

if, centuries from now, aliens invade an abandoned earth and find one artifact of human culture, i really hope it's this film.
